This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love our partners.
A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The plot commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.
The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
